Yûgen
Debut album / NXN Recordings / 2023
Inspired by encounters with Japanese culture and aesthetics, Yûgen explores the expressive possibilities of the trumpet through improvisation and electronics. Across nine pieces, melodic trumpet lines intertwine with acoustic instruments and electronic textures, moving from quiet intimacy to expansive, cinematic soundscapes.

“The sheer breathless beauty of Yûgen is indeed, hard to put into words.”Jazzwise / UK

About / Marius Gjersø
Sound you
can almost touch.
Marius Gjersø is a Norwegian trumpeter, composer and sound artist based in Oslo. Through live electronics, he extends the trumpet beyond its acoustic sound, building music from breath, melody and layers of processed sound.
Working between composition and improvisation, he explores how a single instrument can open up an entire sound world. A phrase becomes a loop, a sustained note unfolds into a texture, and a melody returns in a different form. The trumpet remains the starting point, even when its sound becomes difficult to recognise.
His debut album Yûgen, released by NXN Recordings in 2023, was inspired by encounters with Japanese culture and aesthetics. Its nine pieces bring together trumpet, electronics and acoustic instruments, moving between intimate melodies, delicate textures and passages of cinematic intensity.
On stage, Yûgen continues to evolve. Solo performances bring the trumpet into dialogue with live processing and visuals. In collaboration with dancer Maiko Nishino, sound and movement respond to one another, while lights and projected images transform the surrounding space. The music becomes part of an experience that unfolds throughout the room.
